Voluntary registration is done by choice, in advance. Compulsory registration is forced by a “trigger event” — and costs more.

Trigger events that make registration compulsory

• Selling the property (or transferring it as a gift)
• Creating a first legal mortgage over it
• Granting a lease of more than seven years (and certain other leases)
• Certain transfers under a will, intestacy or court order
